![]() Jordan is a character that we can all find pieces of ourselves in and the struggle between fitting in and staying true to yourself is a universal theme we all need at that age.īut it’s the addition of micro-aggressions and racism that will give you a perfect in-road to having these very important conversations with your middle schooler. Jerry Craft does an amazing job of writing a story that balances the struggle of fitting in at a new school with the realities of being one of the few BIPOC students in that school. And also how important it is for those of us not in those communities to get to read that as well! I can not tell you how important it is for kids (and adults) to get to see themselves reflected in fiction. If you’re looking for a graphic novel that will perfectly pairs humor with social justice and #OwnVoices representation than look no further than Jerry Craft’s New Kid! I absolutely fell in love with this graphic novel over the summer as I was looking for more books to add to our #OwnVoices collection. If your reader loved Dork Diaries, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, or are fans of Raina Tagelmeier than you definitely should pick up a copy of Invisible Emmie in store or through our Bookshop Link! New Kid: With a twist at the end that even caught me by surprise. Your young readers will love it too, it’s a perfect blend of funny but also poignant. As an adult you won’t help but be able to empathize with Emmie. It’s full of the trials of middle school. I love the art in this book because each storyline is done in a dramatically different style, which really helps to bring home the differences between the two girls. And it is juxtaposed to the story of Katie who is popular and bright and everything a middle school girl could hope to be. This is the story of Emmie, who is shy, artistic, and so quiet most people forget she is there. ![]() This is a book I carry in store all of the time and love to share with fans of Amulet and newbies to graphic novels! You can also pick it up through our Bookshop Link!Īnother Middle Grade/young YA option that I adore is the debut book by Terri Libenson titled Invisible Emmie. Finding that sometimes the family you choose is more important than the family you’re raised by the characters are so engaging you will get sucked into this story as much as your young reader. When an evil sorceress takes over the World Below Edmund and Childe must work together to save the kingdom. And human Childe has been raised as the son of the King and Queen of the World Below while Fae child Edmund has been struggling to fit into the human world above. The main arc of the story is that Edmund and Childe were switched at birth by the Fae. Written by Ethan M Aldridge it is also one of my favorite #OwnVoices options for LGBT representation, this volume has a non-binary character represented so beautifully and hints of a romance that comes more into play in volume two made my heart so happy. ![]() This middle grade graphic novel is a perfect blend of fantasy and action.
